Guidelines on Background and Therapeutic Setting

Guidelines on Background and Therapeutic Setting

  • About

By Therese Woodcock on the work of Dr. Margaret Lowenfeld.

The Lowenfeld approach is: one of facilitating the child’s or adolescent’s own understanding of herself in her own terms & change in a way that makes sense to the child or adolescent so that each child can find a solution which is possible for them to effect.

The Lowenfeld approach is underpinned by a theoretical perspective which is one of function. Lowenfeld was interested in explaining how children relate to the world around them and not primarily in a general explanation of why.

Any explanation, that is the question of “why”, is supplied by the child. This is the real acknowledgement of the individuality, the uniqueness of the person with whom you are working, and the evidence for the “why” is supplied by the child or adolescent.
