Some principles of child psychology

Some principles of child psychology

  • About

For any speaker whose contribution falls in the latter part of a conference there is the solid advantage that in the presentation of his theme he can make use of points of agreement with the views already stated by other speakers.

As the subject of my paper is the description of an approach to child psychotherapy, it is a great help that some of these aspects which form a part of all psychotherapeutic work with children have already been described, as these can then be omitted and I can concentrate upon those aspects which are the kernel of the work which I have to put before you.

My object, then, is to describe a form of child psychotherapy which is being carried on in London by a body called the Institute of Child Psychology. This is an out-patient clinic founded in 1928, and therefore co-existent in time with the Child Guidance Movement in Britain, to which some years ago the building was presented by a charitable trust. Its work has developed side by side, and with friendly relations, with the Child Guidance Movement, and its work includes the activities found in every Child Guidance Clinic. The whole programme of work of the institute of child psychology, however, is based on principles which differ from these and are expressed in new and specialised activities.
